1936-1937. Scamman,
Edith, during trips to Alaska and Yukon partly by aeroplane in
1936 and 1937 obtained a large and beautiful collection of plants, now
in Gray Herb. Duplicates in the author's herb. The collection
is published by Miss SCAMMAN (with the aid of several botanists. in the
first place Mr. A. E. PORSILD) in Rhodora 42 (1940) pp. 309-342.
One of Miss SCAMMAN`S plants was described as a new species Claytonia
Scammaniana by the present writer (Bot. Not. 1939). Collections
were made in the following places: In 1936 July 2 Swan's Pt: July 4 Curry;
July 5-7 Mt McKinley Park; July 11-12 Wiseman: July 17-22 Circle and Circle
Hot Springs; July 22-28 Miller House and Eagle Summit; Aug. 7-10 Rapids
Lodge; Aug. 20-27 Tanana-Eagle (on labels »along Yukon R.»)
; Sept. 5-9 Skagway; Sept. 10 Chatham, Chichagof I. In 1937 May 31 Petersburg;
June 4-11 Seward; June 13-22 Mt McKinley Park; July 2-26 Miller House,
Porcupine Dome (4810 feet high, visited on July 12) and Eagle Summit (3880
feet high, 7 miles from Miller House); Aug. 2-12 Wiseman; Aug. 25-28 Rapids
Lodge.
1937. Scheffer,
Victor B., and Steenis, John H., took part in
a U. S. Biol. Survey expedition to the Aleutian Islands headed by MURIE.
Botanical specimens were collected at many of the Aleutian Islands, chiefly
at Unalaska and in the middle part of the chain. Specimens at Nat.
Herb., Washington, duplicates in the author’s herb.
1938. Purer,
Edith A., of the Hoover Highschool, San Diego, Calif., during
a trip to Alaska obtained a collection of plants, now in Nat. Herb., Washington.
Duplicates in the author’s herb. The following places
were visited: Ketchikan July 4; Juneau July 5; Cordova July 7; Anchorage
July 8; Curry July 9; Fairbanks July 13; Eagle July 20; Skagway July 30
and Annette I. Aug. 4.
1939. Nelson,
Aven, Dr., Professor of Botany at the Univ. of Wyoming, and his
wife Ruth Ashton Nelson, during investigations into the
flora and vegetation of Mt McKinley National Park obtained a collection
of about 1000 numbers of plants there. The specimens are in Nat.
Herb., Washington, in the Rocky Mt Herbarium of Laramie; Wyoming, in the
herb. of the National Park Service and in the Univ. of Alaska.
NELSON intends to publish a list of the species. I have not yet
seen anything of his Alaskan collections.
