TURNER published a report on
his collections under the title »Contributions to the Natural History
of Alaska» (49th Congr. 1st Sess. Senate, Misc. Doc. 155, 1886),
which is merely a reprint of ROTHROCK`s »Sketch of the Flora of
Alaska» with his Aleutian plants (often erroneously) inserted. His
ferns were published by DAVENPORT (Bot. Gaz. 7-8, 1882-83).
1875. Bryant,
Charles, Captain, together with his wife made a collection at
Pribilof Is. The specimens are labelled »Seal Islands, Mrs. Capt.
BRYANT» and are to be found in Nat. Herb., Washington and other
herbaria.
1877-78.
Nelson, Edward William, weather observer at St. Michael, later
chief of the Bureau of Biol. Surv. U. S. Dept. of Agricult., made a small
collection, now in Nat. Herb., Washington, at St. Michael. In his report
(49th Congr., 1st Sess. Senate Misc. Doc. No. 156, 1887) are found some
brief comments on Alaskan plants.
1879. Kjellman,
Frans Reinhold, Professor of Botany at Uppsala, and Almquist,
Ernst Bernhard, Professor of Medicine, surgeon, look
part in NORDENSKJÖLD's expedition for the circumnavigation of Asia
on the ship Vega. July 21-26 Pt. Clarence was visited and July 31-Aug.
2 a place on the N.W. side of St. Lawrence I. The fairly large botanical
collections are now at Uppsala, duplicates in Riksmuseum, Stockholm, and
elsewhere. An account of the Vega Expedition was published by A. E. NORDENSKJÖLD
under the title »Vegas färd kring Asien och Europa . . .»;
2 vol., Stockholm 1880-81. English translation by A. LESLIE »The
voyage of the Vega round Asia and Europe; with a historical review of
previous journeys along the north coast of the Old World»: 2 vols
(London 1881). The scientific results were published by A. E. NORDENSKJÖLD
in »Vega-Expeditionens Vetenskapliga lakttagelser»; 5 vols
(Stockholm 1882-87). In this publication are included two reports on the
phanerogamic plant collections by KJELLMAN (Phanerogams of St. Lawrence
I. and Phanerogams of the West-Esquimaux Land) and one on the lichens
by ALMQUIST (Lichen-vegetation of the coasts of the Bering Sea).
KJELLMAN also published a paper on the algae of the Bering Sea (»Om
Beringhavets algflora» Sv. Vet. Akad. Handl. n. ser. vol. 20, No
5, 1882 and vol. 23, No. 8, 1888).

Robert, Dr., collected some plants at St. Paul I., now in Gray
Herb., Field Mus. and in N. Y. Bot. Gard.
